The Goethe Leadership Centre is a Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Behind the Centre are Rolf van Dick, Professor of Social Psychology, and Michael Kosfeld, Professor of Management. FLEX is one of its partner institutions, along with the Center for Leadership and Behavior in Organizations (CLBO) and the Global Leadership Centres Roundtable (GLCR).

The Centre brings together researchers from psychology, economics and other social sciences around one question: how can leaders promote social cohesion and cooperation, and improve well-being and resilience? In a time of many crises, high uncertainty and growing polarization, the question has become more pressing. The starting point is identity leadership, a concept from social identity theory which holds that effective leaders create and represent a shared sense of “us” within a group. The Centre looks at how this works for individuals, organizations and societies, where it succeeds, and where it can be misused. The work builds on van Dick’s research on identity leadership in the global GILD network and on Kosfeld’s experiments showing how leaders can induce and maintain cooperation in teams. Together, they aim to develop a new model of leadership that integrates work from both disciplines and to compare it across cultures.

The DFG approved the Centre in December 2025, with slightly over €3 million for a first funding phase of four years. The Centre runs a fellowship program. Yan Chen, S. Alex Haslam, and Rudolf Kerschreiter are permanent fellows, and there will be more than 20 senior and junior fellows as well as several visiting fellows who will join the Centre for shorter stays. Half of the fellowships, two postdoctoral positions and one tenure-track professorship are set aside for early career researchers. The Centre also plans a workshop every year and a conference every two years.

We look forward to working closely with the Centre.
