Kevin Bauer, Rebecca Heigl, Oliver Hinz, and Michael Kosfeld receive the 2024 Best Paper Award from the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS) for their paper “Feedback Loops in Machine Learning: A Study on the Interplay of Continuous Updating and Human Discrimination.”
Their research reveals that while continuous updating of machine learning models can reduce algorithmic discrimination and improve efficiency, persistent human discrimination may block these self-correcting effects and even cause unbiased models to become discriminatory over time. The findings examine the complex interplay between human oversight and algorithmic learning, with direct implications for emerging AI regulation.
The award ceremony will take place during the JAIS Awards Breakfast at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). Further details about the publication are available here.
